Internship: Investigating Resin Uptake in Sandwich Composite Panels

Introduction

Sandwich composite panels are widely used for their high bending strength and stiffness with minimal weight. However, during production, the core material absorbs resin, leading to unexpected weight increases. This internship focuses on understanding and quantifying this phenomenon to help improve composite design and production.

Objective

The primary objective of this internship is to estimate the weight increase in sandwich constructions compared to base laminates and dry core materials. You’ll investigate which parameters influence resin uptake, identify countermeasures to reduce it, and assess any impact on mechanical performance.

Assignment Scope

You will begin by researching key influencing parameters such as core type, surface finish, resin viscosity, and manufacturing method. A reference sample and production process will be defined to allow consistent comparison. Using a design of experiments approach, you’ll produce and analyse samples to assess the influence of different variables. Interim conclusions will help refine strategies to reduce resin uptake. If time allows, the influence of resin absorption on impact strength may also be studied.

Deliverables

By the end of the internship, you will deliver:

  • A report estimating weight increase from resin uptake.
  • A parameter matrix showing influential vs. non-influential variables.
  • Recommendations to limit resin absorption.
