Internship: Replacement of the Brienenoord Bridge with a composite bridge design

September 2025

Introduction

Recent reports have shown an urgent need to replace several aging concrete bridges in the Netherlands due to corrosion related microcracks in the rebar. While the Brienenoord Bridge is not currently affected, this project explores the next-generation solution: a composite bridge.

In collaboration with Composite Structures and Solico Engineering, you’ll help design a sustainable, lightweight, and maintenance-free alternative to traditional bridges — and support the transition to safer, more resilient infrastructure.

What You’ll Work On:

  • Research the current bridge situation and write a basis of design report
  • Conduct a variant study to compare design options
  • Design a composite bridge that meets all structural and safety requirements
  • Produce and test laminate samples
  • Validate your design using Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • Create professional renderings and final presentation material
