Longest Composite Bridge in Europe - Pedestrian Bridge Ambacht

Europe’s longest composite bridge officially opened!

Solico worked on the Cycle-Pedestrian Bridge Ambacht in Zaandam. This impressive bridge, spanning over 400 meters, crosses the N516 and is composed of 19 segments. These segments range from 16 meters to the longest at 32.5 meters, with most segments measuring around 20 meters.

Solico was responsible for the structural verification of this innovative glassfibre-reinforced plastic bridge. The use of composite materials, such as glassfibre-reinforced plastic, offers several key benefits for bridge construction. Composites are lightweight yet strong, making transportation and installation easier while still providing the durability needed for long-term use. They are also resistant to corrosion, reducing maintenance costs and extending the lifespan of the bridge.

Additionally, the section of the bridge that crosses the road is engineered to withstand vehicle impacts from below, ensuring both safety and reliability.
